Navstar is the name of the United States' global positioning system.
Originally designed for the U.S. military, it's now widely used for civilian purposes. When most people use the term GPS, they're referring to the U.S. Navstar system.
Russia operates a similar system known as GLONASS, and countries in the European Union are working on their own system called Galileo.
