Selective Availability is a feature of the U.S. GPS system that enables the Department of Defense (DOD) to purposely degrade the accuracy of signals that are used for civilian purposes. It has not been active since May 1, 2000, when President Clinton ordered it turned off.
It U.S. is not expected to re-enable Selective Availability at a global level, but it is developing means to disrupt GPS service in localized areas to protect military interests.
